Networker and Informix

People, We are currently implementing Legato Networker to backup our Informix instances. From the testing performed it seems that the process that backups up the logical logs is taking around 25 seconds to backup a 2Mb log file. From the initial diagnosis it seems that Informix is waiting for around 23 to 24 seconds and performs the backup in around 1 second. Is this related to some Informix tuning or Networker tuning ? Regards Kenneth
You will find restoring logical logs from a storage manager to be very slow and painful if you actually use tape to archive them. The time you see Informix waiting is the time it is taking the storage manager to find the tape it wants to write to and put it in place; the one second is the actual write time. Now think of it in reverse. If you have 1000 logical logs that are needed as part of a restore, you will have to wait 25*1000 = 25000 sec or over 6 hours just waiting for the storage manager to locate the tape it wants to read from and put it in play, compared to just 17 minutes for it to perform the actual data restore. The best bet is to allow your daily level 0 archives to go to tape but have the storage manager use local disk (not tape) to manage/store the logical logs. Take care. Clifton M.
