Timeout in 4GL Programms

Hi folks, I want to implement a timeout of a 4GL application from inside the application.I tried to use alarm() but I found out that alarm() is used internally from Informix and thus resetted after each keyboard stroke. This point was also addressed by Jonathan Leffler in another article I found in the CDI Archive. Is there a way to prevent Informix from using the alarm() function or another way to accomplish a timeout from inside the 4GL application.
