IDS Media on DVD
Posted in 2008
Guy asked if Informix IDS should be distributed on DVD instead of CD, noting that the bundle was approaching maximum CD capacity on some platforms and DVD would allow future content additions. Responses were uniformly positive, with multiple users confirming DVD would work for them. One respondent noted that current IDS 11.10 distribution is download-only, and preferred multiple smaller downloads to single large ones.

Would anyone have a problem if the IDS bundle was supplied on DVD rather than CD? It provides the opportunity to change the bundle contents in the future and provide additional components (currently the bundle is close to the maximum CD size on some platforms). We're interested to know if there will be any demand to continue making it available on CD or whether DVD would work for everyone. Thanks Guy

DVD would be good especially if it means the manuals are shipped with the product Cheers Paul ------Original Message------ From: Guy . Dear Guy: IDS on DVD will for my company. Some of our software is now too large for CD also. I have been on Informix maintenance for 25 years+/- and I recently upgraded to 11.10. IDS is not supplied on any media any more. It must be downloaded. The $50,000 upgrade price does not include the $1 media (or $35 if you add shipping/handling). Downloads of multi-gigabyte DVD's are still a little harder than downloads of 700 megabyte CD's. I will make my answer specific to the current distribution method for $50,000 purchases, Downloads. I would prefer multiple smaller downloads to single larger ones. I will comment that the internet keeps growing and DVD's are much easier to use, I would defer DVD downloads only until such time as the internet downloads can be handled without interruptions much the same way as CD are currently (most of the time anyhow). I'm ok with DVDs but it would be great to have an option to have CD's also much like Linux distributions (where some of the CD's are optional). Following up on this.... First as many of you know, I'm an IBMer, but this is my view as a customer (where I spend 95% of my time)... Most of the times I download the product... The customer sometimes receives a bundle of CDs, but in practice when I need an installation package there is always one newer version available, so I keep faithful to the download... Yes, the packages may get bigger, but the IBM site has that small java applet that allows us to restart if something fails... And many times I simply download it from home (many times is faster than in the customer site - possibly because I do it at different hours). So, I don't see any problem in DVDs and if possible keep the essentials in one package and the options on another... Regards.
