After all: I could be wrong. >Don Boothby >DBA for State of Indiana You caught my typo, should have been 1994 for Informix on SCO (October to be exact), not 1993! Yes it was on a PC, Compaq 66mhz pentium, 128 mb of RAM, 5-2.1 gig drives, 4 network cards, and SCS1-2 diskcontrollers. Not exactly what you would find on someones desktop but still a pretty big machine. If you think Oct. 1994 is dated, thats all well and fine too cause you see we stopped running the ad in question showing off that benchmark result months ago. This whole thread is about past history. Maybe in October of 95, Informix will run again and we'll see. Maybe they won't >This line of reasoning is all well and good with SCO UNIX running on a -- let me >guess -- PC(?) in 1993(!) with Oracle v7.x and Informix v5.x. The PC part of this was due to the fact that PC-Mag did the benchmark, they wanted an INTEL platform. I am not aware of any published benchmarks of Oracle/Informix on a leading midrange computer. Further back in this thread, someone claimed Oracle was touting a benchmark number Oracle got on Unix versus the benchmark number Informix got on DOS. I was trying to point out that 1.) Oracle was running on a more 'dos' like OS then Informix, not the other way around 2.) Informix was running on Unix 3.) the hardware used was IDENTICAL 4.) the vendor (Oracle/Informix) picked the OS, not PC-Mag 5.) the vendor opted to participate in the benchmark, they were not forced to, they have the option to not participate. The article in PC-Mag in fact lists a couple of vendors who were asked to participate but declined. I did not at any time make the statement: >Are there any >benchmarks by anyone supporting your allegation that Oracle performs >faster/better than Informix 7.1 Although I believe the above to be true. I have seen it myself in private, customer benchmarks more then once. I did not however, make that 'allegation' in this thread. Thomas Kyte tkyte@us.oracle.com Oracle Government
