Re: ONBAR backup/restore between two servers
Posted in 1999
I am running 7.24.UC5 on Solaris 2.6, and I have done this several times,
successfully. There are
several things to watch for when doing this.
* Informix says that the backup must be taken with the "-w" option in order
to do this. This procedure works without using the "-w", but doing so
will require applying logical logs. Taking the backup with the "-w"
option will eliminate the need to apply logical logs (unless you want
your restore to be completely current with your backup).
* The instance on the target system must have been initialized (using
"oninit -i"). Infrastructure (dbspace and chunk names and sizes,
logical and physical logs) on the target system must be identical
(for all practical purposes) to the source system. That is, dbspaces on
the target system must be at least as large as those on the source
system.
* DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES on the two systems need not be the same,
but SERVERNUM must be.
* The "$INFORMIXDIR/etc/ixbar.servernum" file must be copied from the
source system to the target system. This is the file that tells onbar
what to restore.
* Make sure the storage manager setup on the target system matches its
physical configuration. For example, if the source system has two tape
drives (one for data backup and one for logical log backup) and the
target system has only one drive, don't just copy the storage manager
configuration from one system to the other.
* Now you are ready to do the restore using "onbar -r".
Best of luck. HTH.
