Yes, you can have multiple engines on the server. We currently have both
6.0 and 7.1 engines running on one of our clients' site. Please be very
careful with the setting of the ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES used by Informix, like
INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER ,etc. for each engines as otherwise you can have
a mess. For example, if you accidentally bring up the 7.1 engine on your
production data (5.02 format), all the data will be converted to work in the
7.1 format and you may have to run the reversion procedure in order to reverse
all the data back to the "old" format. Last but not least, have a good back
up of your production data before you start doing anything like this.
