Unix ODBC connection to IDS engine

What I remember to be very simple years ago is stumping me currently. IDS 11.5FC8, CSDK 4.10, AIX 7.1. Simply trying to create ODBC connectivity on that box (to allow Golden Gate to do replication from IFMX to that other database). Created/edited the odbc.ini and odcinst.ini files; defined ODBCINI env var to point to odbc.ini. Using isql to test the connection: "isql [dsn name] informix [pwd]" but it appears that isql isn't using the ODBC connection since it thinks the dsn name is a database, etc. (as if you passed an invalid database name). Again, this is all on the same box but I'm using a soctcp connection since doing local loopback (which I can't imagine matters). What am I missing?
