Which platform is the fastest, and > >:most stable? > >: We run on Data General M88K platforms, which are being phased out for Intel PentiumPro platforms, and have seriously looked at DG Intel and Sun. The main thing with Informix 7.xx, for best performance, you need a fast multiprocessor system. The nore CPUs the better. Our DG 88k's each have 24 to 32 Motorola 88110 @ 75MHZ. The DG Intel with 16 200MHZ PPro's blows them away as does the Sun with 8CPUs. Just remember multiple CPUs. Oh leave aging off and if you can use OS facilities to perform processor affinity you may be better off, depending on the specific platform. Informix affinity can only nail a CPU VP to a single processor, but on many platforms several CPUs share a level two and/or three cache (and may even own part of central RAM) so that letting a CPU VP float among the processors in a cache/memory group may improve performance as AIO VPs, and application programs, can be affined to the same CPU group and float within the group such that the CPU and AIO VPs do not interfer. This way you do not have to reduce the number of CPU VPs to reserve one or more processors for AIO VPs to use. BTW only CPU VPs are affined in the Informix model not AIO, LIO, PIO, ADM, MSC etc. Using external tools to affine VPs you can affix all of the VPs intelligently (I have a great affixing script for DG which can be adapted). On the DGs doing things this way we get 2X the IO performance from AIO VPs than from KAIO which Informix insists is faster! Art S. Kagel
