I believe that the actual table name is held only in systables and that the link to all other tables is by tabid. However, I have never been tempted to change anything else in systables (yet). I would think that you might well be able to change column names in syscolumns if you needed to, again because within a table the column is named only in the syscolumns table and referred to elsewhere by number. I have not tried this with v6 or v7 but would not think it is much different.
