Re: INFORMIX --> SQL-Server

There is no Product that will directly link a SQL Server Database Server to an Informix Database Server. The usual procedure for integrating data is to use ODBC and write a simple application that executes either on a client PC, or the server. Senario 1 Informix Running on a Unix Server SQL Server running on NT Server Solution Write VB application using either RDO or ADO object (Supports multiple concurrent ODBC connections). Open one connection to a DSN pointed to SQL Server database, and a second DSN pointed to Informix Database. Create a Record/Result set to read source table. and Insert rows into target table using EXECUTE or Resultset/Addnew/Update methods. Host the VB application on a client PC, or preferable on the NT Server hosting the SQL Server Database for better performance. Senaria 2 Informix OWGS or DSA running on NT Server SQL Server running on Same NT Server Solution Write Same VB application (tiny amount of code required), and host it on the NT Server hosting both RDBMS products. Either of these avoid crude export to text, import from text senarios. You could also use MS-Access, create an MDB, linking both Informix & SQL Server tables to it, then write access queries to move rows between tables (supports hetrogenious joins). This though appears the simplest solution, but it is very inefficient, and resource intensive, particularly for the client due to the excessive and painfully slow requirements of the JET Sql engine when using ODBC. VB with the RDO is the proven choice, allthough ADO is the newer object and just as fast.
