You can get bad magic numbers for a few reasons. One of the most common is trying to read wrong format tapes, or trying to read character cpio headers without the "-c" flag. I would try; 1) looking at the CD by mounting it as a file system. If you are trying to read the CD by "cpio -iduvm </dev/cd0" (you don't say in your posting), this will not work if the cpio file has simply been placed on the CD. You need to mount the CD and then "cpio -iduvm </mnt/xxxx.cpio". 2) tar (just in case, I've seen badly labelled tapes from Informix before) 3) try with and without the character cpio header. ie cpio -idumvc and cpio -iduvm.
