My company has ran Informix Dynamic Server on the Solaris platform for 10 years now. It has proven to be extremely reliable. There are now discussion ongoing to move our database and associated 4gl applications onto IBM pseries servers running RedHat Linux RHEL AS 4.3. Does anyone have any experience or comments as to the likely reliability, performance or problems we can expect on Linux versus Solaris?

We moved from Informix SE on Solaris to IDS on Linux (RH 7.x, now CentOS). We also have 4GL programs. We have had very few Linux-related issues. Linux has been a great platform for us. On multiple occasions I have had my IDS servers up for a year without downtime. And some of our downtime was when our building cut off power for a weekend or something. Your question might get better specifics and details in the linux-informix SIG group, though. One tip: the guys at Unique Systems have been doing Linux deployments of IDS for many years. They have recently been testing IDS on PowerPC from IBM (iSeries?). They are very pleased with their results so far. You could try contact Craig S. at Unique (www.uniqsys.com) for more details. All servers work without problems. You must check IDS page size in Solaris, because on Linux page size is 2K. If in Solaris page size is 4K you should test your application!!! Dimitar Bachvarov
