I had to insert the following at line 4 of your "Makefile":
.SUFFIXES: .c .o
.c.o:
$(CC) -c $(CFLAGS) $<
Note: the last line above must begin with a tab character.
The platform was:
$ uname -a
HP-UX B.11.11 U 9000/800
$ gcc -v
gcc version 3.2
