Query optimization is independent of the front-end tools. -> ->... jeff alan@po.den.mmc.com (Alan Popiel) replies: Thanks, Jeff, for the response. However, query optimization was only part of my question. Cursor management is definitely front-end stuff. Without knowing the innards of your tools, it seems to me that a compiler writer MIGHT be able to do more to optimize cursor usage than is possible with an interpreter. On the other hand, for ease of maintenance and upgrading, the Informix 4GL compiler might be designed to generate C code that is logically equivalent to the p-code generated by the interpreter. This might be considered trade secret stuff, so I will understand if Informix chooses not to divulge their approach. However, if a general discussion of this is not considered sensitive, I would like to know which approach Informix took. Some general information on this topic seems like the kind of thing that might be in a manual section entitled "Considerations When Porting Applications between Compiled 4GL and RDS".
