We still want migrate from IDS7.31 (AIX 4.3.3) to IDS10 (AIX5.3) I want to know which advantage or dis-advantage brings 32-or 64-bit IDS to our production. Our production is medium-sized, about 40Gb database with 700 connections, the applicationis in C++ on Windows. Each session (pc-clients) is running this application and is reading, updating rows the whole day, all little short transactions. With a 64-bit platform and 64 bit AIX, should we install 32-bit or 64-bit informix ? And can we expect some problems with our client-PC with client application in 32-bit ? And must the SDK on AIX be the same xx-bit as IDS ? (we have 1 background appli on AIX) Thanks for your suggestions. Hi, If you want to use more than 4 GB Ram for buffering etc, you should definitely install the 64bit edition. We always use it since we are more flexible in memory usage (even on a machine with 4 GB Ram only, cause you never know what comes ..). Hi,
64bit should be the preferred version because you don't have any
limitations on shared memory usage (buffers, locks, shared memory).
All applications connecting over the network (e.g. PCs) don't see
any difference when connecting to 32 or 64 bit - nothing needs to
be done here.
If you have applications on the database machine you have to
possibilities:
- migrate your application to 64bit (compile with 64bit and 64bit-SDK)
- connect over TCP/IP (e.g. sqlhosts on HPUX: onsoctcp) and if you
don't already use the shared connect libraries from the 32bit SDK
set INFORMIXDIR and SHLIB_PATH/LD_LIBRARY_PATH explicitly to the SDK.
Remember: You should install the SDK to a different INFORMIXDIR than the
server - but that rule applies to 32bit only installations, too.
Bye

Marcus, Andreas, about shared mem that's a really good argument I didn't have noticed. So IDS will be 64-bit. Our P550 server has 8 Gb (for 2 partitions) about Pc talking over lan, just as I was thinking it didn't matter 32- or 64-bit. about Server applications, we are using soctcp. Having the choise between 32 or 64 bit SDK it's better to be in parrallel with IDS, even if installed in different directories. Thanks, Yves -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] Sent: 06 June 2006 10:47 To: ids@iiug.org Subject: RE: 32 or 64 bits IDS [6888] Hi, If you want to use more than 4 GB Ram for buffering etc, you should definitely install the 64bit edition. 64 bit advantages: More memory for buffer cache, PDQ memory, etc. Faster performance. disadvantages: Shared memory clients must be 64bit also. 32bit clients can still use TCP and stream pipe connections.
