OK, END OF STORY!
That last bounce of the production system is what was needed. Obviously
(now ;-) it was still operating under the erroneous sqlhosts wherein
both shared memory servers had the same service name. When I bounced
the production server, it oriented itself to the corrected sqlhosts.
We are back in business.
