You don't want to waste disk space, and increase archive/restore times, by having unnecessarily large logs, but you want them to be large enough so that: 1. They take a reasonable time all to fill. For example, if your site has no weekend cover, you want to make sure that, in the event of failure of log back-ups, your logs don't fill before you come in. 2. Users don't experience aborted transactions because of a lack of log size. If you could arrange to do your alter table out-of-hours, and switch off logging for the duration, you'll probably be OK. On the otheer hand, disk space is cheap. Neil Truby Chase Manhattan Bank Bournemouth, Uk
