Newbie: DB Migration
Posted in 1999
Hello All,
Right now we run SCO os5.04 and Online 5.07.UC1. We have a lot of 4gls and shell scripts that use dbaccess. All of this runs locally on the SCO box.
I am in the process of moving the db-engine over to a sparc box running SunOS 5.6 and IDS 7.3.UC6. In the upgrade I purchased the following for the SCO box:
Connect 2.01.UC1
SQL 7.20.UD2
4GL RDS 7.20.UD2
So I have successfully exported/imported the DB over a couple of times (thanks to this group) to get an idea of how long it takes and am happy with the results.
So my first problem is that I absolutely must maintain the operation of Online on the SCO box during the move so I can fall back. I plan to do the move overnight when downtime is acceptable.
So what I was hoping to do is to install the Connect, SQL, and 4gl rds products in a seperate directory, then test the "compilation" of my source files with the new 4gl rds product, and then test the connectivity with a stale db I exported to the sun box.
If testing went well I could move the engine overnight, change some environment variables for users, And then that would be it?
I was kind of hoping some of you could give me some tips on what I may be doing wrong, or not thinking about when making a transition like this.
One real important thing is, if I set (and export) INFORMIXDIR to a new directory other than the one Online is using, will I definitely not corrupt my current online setup when running the installation scripts? Because I think I am missing some media.
Anyway, I _really_ appreciate any feedback, and thanks in advance.
Olaf
