ontape in 9.4
Posted in 2003
A user migrating from IDS 7.3 to 9.4 on HP-UX wanted to automate nightly level-0 archives from cron. Feeding a file containing a newline to "ontape -s -L 0 < infile" didn't satisfy ontape's prompts, even though the same trick worked for log backups (ontape -a). Suggested workarounds were piping the input instead, e.g. echo '0\\n\\n' | ontape -s -L, or a script that defines RETURN='\\n' and echoes it to the running ontape after a sleep. It was also clarified that ALLOW_NEWLINE concerns newline characters allowed in CHAR data, and that in 9.4 ontape and onbar are supported but onarchive is not. No confirmation from the original poster is recorded.

Hi. I am in the process of migrating from IDS 7.30 to 9.4 on HP-UX 11.
We currently run a full archive nightly and backup the logical logs
every hour.
We archive to tape and backup the logs to disk. The logs are handled by
a=20
cron job, while an operator handles the archive. For the logical log
job, I have no=20
problems running ontape -a with stdin redirected to a file that simply
has a return.
Since I will be losing my operator, I am attempting to do the same type
of thing
for the nightly archive. However, I can't seem to get the "ontape -s -L
0 <infile" command
to recognize the return that is in the infile. I'm surprised since this
seems to be what I am
doing for logical logs.
Am I missing something????
Also, does anyone know what the "ALLOW_NEWLINE" parameter in the
onconfig file
is for.
Thanks in advance for any assistance......mick
ALLOW_NEWLINE, I believe, has to do with newlines in the data, such as a
char . . .
Is there a difference in ontape between 7.3 and 9.4? Maybe extra input
needed??

I find "echo '0\\
\\
' | ontape -s -L " is easier syntax than < infile

New line characters are allowed in char fields in 9.4 version.

This is what works for me:
I have a script, backup.ksh which defines a variable: RETURN='\\
'
and executes:
ontape -s -L 0 > /usr/informix/ontapeout.log 2>&1 | sleep 10 | echo $RETURN
