GTE STANDARDIZES ON INFORMIX Informix Database Servers to Run all of GTE's Telephone Operations Applications Across the Enterprise Fully Deployed Systems Expected to Support Nearly 50,000 Users MENLO PARK, Calif., (February 8, 1995) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX), the leader in parallel processing database technology, today announced that GTE Telephone Operations (GTE) signed a multimillion dollar contract addendum with Informix to standardize on Informix products. The expanded contract with Informix is part of GTE's enterprisewide initiative to move all corporate data to a client/server environment, that will support upwards of 50,000 users. Virtually all of the client/server applications used to operate GTE's business will be deployed using INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM), an implementation of Informix's multithreaded, parallel processing architecture, Dynamic Scalable Architecture(TM) (DSA). The applications will run on hardware platforms from AT&T Global Information Solutions, Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM. Under the terms of the agreement, GTE has the option to standardize on other Informix products, including connectivity tools such as INFORMIX-Enterprise Gateway and application development tools such as INFORMIX-NewEra(TM). "It was time for us to make a commitment to one database," said Blayne Maring, assistant vice president technology specification, GTE Telephone Operations. "Informix's database has been a reliable, outstanding performer that has proven itself in GTE applications. By standardizing on Informix, we expect our operational costs to drop significantly." "GTE required database technology that offered the performance and scalability to manage all of the GTE's data -- nearly 18 terabytes," said Phil White, chairman and CEO of Informix. "INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server with DSA technology continues to be the only database available today to effectively and efficiently manage the data requirements of a large corporation such as GTE." Reengineering GTE's data GTE's decision to standardize on Informix database technology is a key component of GTE's company-wide effort to migrate all of its data from a ISAM/VSAM environment to a client/server environment. GTE views data as a shared company resource, and has begun deploying "data servers" that will act as central repositories for all data. These servers will be deployed using OnLine Dynamic Server and will house applications for all areas of GTE's business operations, including sales, marketing, customer support and facilities. Why INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server Since its introduction in December 1993, customer and TPC-C benchmark tests have revealed OnLine Dynamic Server's ability to successfully scale and demonstrate dramatic performance increases over rival database servers. Outstanding results in customer benchmark tests with OnLine Dynamic Server have translated into significant customer wins, including GTE, Holiday Inn, Home Depot, MCI, Transamerica Commercial Finance and Wells Fargo. Customers discovered that OnLine Dynamic Server was the superior RDBMS in demonstrating the scalability and optimal performance to manage their OLTP and data-intensive processing requirements, as well as providing a level of support to ensure a successful and smooth implementation of their business-critical applications.
