datetime conversions???HELP!

I am trying to write a stored procedure that will accept a datetime year to second value and return a numeric (10,0) value. The return will represent the number of seconds since the Epoch (Midnight, Jan 1, 1970). I am getting conversion errors trying to convert from datetime or interval to the numeric(10,0) variable. Does anyone have any suggestions here? A reply via email would be MOST appreciated. Thanks...scd
