Using IN with PREPARE

During some recent timing trials with the applications I am developing, I discovered that using the 'IN ' (list) in a WHERE clause for a select statement should a significant improvement in query speed over using a BETWEEN clause. When I tried to insert these 'IN' clauses into prepared select statements, the engine returned a syntax error during run-time as soon the prepare statement was executed. I am using version 4.0 on an AT&T 3B2. Any ideas?
