There are two main advantages to seperating the indexes from the data chunks that I can think of. 1) By placing the data on seperate physical devices from the indexes, you might be able to get a performance boost by avoiding some potential disk contention. 2) Since on attached indexes, the index pages are interspersed with data pages, by having detached indexes, the data and index pages become more "compact". This can be an advantage for read-aheads. Madison Pruet
