4gl TEXT variable insert

Does anyone know how to: a.) Assign a TEXT variable a value not from the database...I can't use the LET statement. or b.) Insert a CHAR variable type into a TEXT column. I've tried using LET v_notes = icgi_getvalue("WWW_NOTES") and it returns a -4323 error. It won't let me assign a value to a variable defined as a TEXT. If I can't assign it a value, how can I possibly get data from user input and insert that data into a TEXT data type? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
