We're attempting to migrate from having the lmhosts file on all the windows-based pc's to using DNS. However, once the lmhosts file is removed, the Informix client software can no longer find the database server. When attempting to connect using the ilogin utility, I get the -25556 error (non-existant sqlhosts file). Has anyone encounteed this error before and come up with a fix? -Jerry

Hmmm. lmhosts is used by Windows to correlate NetBIOS machine names to IP addressses for NetBIOS over TCP/IP. DNS is used by TCP/IP to resolve machine names to IP addresses and vice versa. DNS is not a substitute/replacement for LMHOSTS. For that you need WINS. DNS can replace the TCP/IP hosts file (which is nothing to do with the LMHOSTS file). >However, once the lmhosts file is removed, the >Informix client software can no longer find the database server. On Windows platforms, the Informix sqlhosts information is held in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Informix\\Environment HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Informix\\netrc HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Informix\\SQLHOSTS Has anyone encounteed this error before and come up with a >fix? The reason for your problem is likely one of: 1. Someone has changed the contents of these registry entries. Check/fix with SetNet32. 2. You are logged in as a different user (some of the entries are user specific - see above). Check/fix with SetNet32. 3. The environment variable INFORMIXSQLHOSTS (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Informix\\Environment\\INFORMIXSQLHOSTS) specifies the Windows machine name where the SQLHOSTS registry hive can be found. In general, this value should be the name of the local windows machine or blank. If it is not blank, or Windows networking cannot locate the named machine (since the LMHOSTS file has gone???) then you will have problems. Chris
