Re: Constraints

Your DBA did the RIGHT THING!!!! Constraints are just that, it elminates you (programmers or anyone else) from violationg the RI. You do not have to guess, you do not have to wonder why. The constraint at DB level will keep you ONLINE. Plus you will get the added benifit of how things will work for users, since they will be executing with THESE CONSTRAINTS applied and the DBA can tune the engine accordingly. JUST BESURE YOUR DB was not created in the ROOT DB space and you will be glad you have them applied. Think of the code you will NOT have to do, since the DB will not allow it with the constraints applied. All you have to do is insure you do error check and respond accordingly. IF you had to program for the DB I have now, with no CONSTRAINTS you would not be sending this e-mail. I have programmers who spend their time doing data correction, when a DB constraint would have not allowed the data in the first place, but the program DID! Anyway since I have arrived as DBA at my shop I refuse to even CREATE a table UNLESS DB constraints have been identified. This has become an HARD FAST RULE FOR ALL MY DB's for Informix 7.
