Legato/EMC Networker support for Informix IDS on S
Posted in 2007
EMC Legato (formerly Legato) dropped support for Informix IDS on Solaris 10, causing concerns for users upgrading from Solaris 9. The thread discusses this as part of a broader trend of vendors withdrawing Informix support. IBM Informix Marketing was reportedly in contact with EMC to encourage continued support, but no current status was provided. Alternative backup solutions suggested include Veritas NetBackup and IBM TSM.

Is anyone else running into this issue? Looks like Legato (now EMC) simply pulled support for Informix IDS (v7, v9, v10) on anything past Solaris 9. Legato and Informix/IBM used to be tightly integrated, such that the "lite" version of Legato is always shipped with Informix IDS to support OnBar but it looks like EMC has given up on Informix now. What is everyone else doing if their UNIX admins are pushing to move to Solaris 10? Switching their OnBar implementations to use Veritas/NetBackup? Thanks in advance. Verghese Jacob
Something close not quite the same - Running Aix 5, upgrading to IDS10. It seems that they don't have yet a legato client module that supports IDS10. Ahhh - please don't beat me . I DO aplogize for the MIME format above ! I have no idea what happend to my Notes - it suddenly starts writing MIME format when I reply to froum mails . Ok: Back to EMC Legato Support . I do know people from IBM Informix Marketing are in contact with EMC Legato to explain to them that they really wanto to continue their support for IDS . I have no current status though. You may want to contact Legato and tell them too. Rgds Tilman
Verghese, I will suggest you to use TSM if you want to change it from Legato to any other SMV. TSM is very good and works perfectly with IDS. Thanks.. OK, but it is not like we want to change. It has been working just fine with Networker. The bigger issue here is what this saying about Informix/IBM when major vendors simply stop supporting your product. A similar thing occurred with Informatica where they don't support Informix v7 anymore. In that case, it is a little bit more understandable since there are newer IDS versions that are supported by them. With the Networker/EMC issue, they are simply not porting to ANY Informix version on Solaris 10. Would you have any names/numbers from those making contact from IBM and/or EMC that you could share? Verghese, We are also trying to stop using our current storage manager, BMC SQL-BackTrack. Every time a new version of IDS comes out, BMC says they will not support it, but they eventually do. We have used SQL-BackTrack for many years and it has always worked very well for us. Our problem is that the price of the software has gotten too high. We are investigating TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) because we have heard our company already owns it so it is "free" for us. Furthermore, TSM is an IBM product so one would hope they continue to support IDS.
