Q: Do I really need Informix-Net AND Intersolv ODBC-Driver

for a client to connect to online7.10 -R Klaus Intersolve's driver, unless it has changed quite a bit is a stub program (purists please excuse the description) which only interfaces as far as I-NETPC on the PC. The layer between the PC is handled by I-NETPC and the database server. Version 7.x of Informix bundle the connectivity with the engine; so you most definitely DO NOT require I-Star on the server. It doesn't sound like your intersolve rep knows much about Informix. There are other OPEN drivers available which handle the transport between the PC all the way to the server. Typically these drivers have a server side daemon which handles the connection to Online. An example of this is Openlink (download from www.openlink.co.uk). they also have a 'stub' version of the driver, if you want to use I-NETPC. I understand Visionware also have an open driver. As of last year when we trialled it; it did not support version 7 of Informix but I would be surprised if this is still the case. My personal experiences with ODBC drivers has been. intersolve/I-Net - Unstable, difficult to use if you are flicking between instances and databases. Openlink - Stable, easy to install, easy to use, some handy security features, and fast. -- -- Peter Tashkoff NZ Kiwifruit Project Consultant/DBA Marketing Board. But at Intersolv a guy told me, that i neeed Informix-Net or Informix-Star Software. Now I'm confused, is that right? Why don't they talk to the RPC-port of Informix online7.10 ? When I ordered the ODBC-Driver for Informix Online 7.10, I was convinced, that I wouldn't need any more Software.
