We have a large Sun network running NIS with dozens of
servers and hundreds of workstations. Online 5.0 is
installed on a SPARC-10 dedicated to Informix use,
and users access the database remotely using I-NET
and I-STAR.
There are currently over 100 users successfully accessing
the DB remotely; however one user cannot. This user
receives error -951 "User is not known on remote host."
This user satisfies all of the requirements of Informix's
remote access, including:
1. .rhosts file in home directory, readable by all,
which establishes the proper trust relationship (+ username)
2. passwordless account on remote machine
The user can log in directly to the Informix machine, so the login
is obviously valid. Once there, the user can access the database
using dbaccess. When dbaccess is run from a client, it runs fine
except that the remote database is not shown when 'QueryLanguage'
or 'Database' is chosen, and when the database name is typed in
explictly, error -951 is displayed.
The user's home directory is readable and 'executable' by all
and their group is that of all other users.
Our vendor has passed it off as a Unix problem and suggested
rebooting the server. The fact that the user can rlogin and
rsh to the server seems to indicate otherwise.
I know this was a long positing, but if you got to this point
and have any advice or related experience, I would be extremely
glad to 'hear' it.
Thanks,
Carolyn
