unable to execute binary file error:ISQL on Linux
Posted in 2006
Resolved: architecture mismatch between the 64-bit ISQL binaries and the 32-bit environment.

I am TRYING to install Informix SE, ISQL and ESQLC on a new box. I have
been running on a RISC. Now I have another IBM but running Redhat
Linux.
I have SE set up OK but I cannot run SQL - I get the error: unable to
execute binary file unable to execute binary file
What can this mean?
The version I have is SQL Devt 7.32 64 bit
Permission and environment variables are OK. If there were not, would
not SE fail to (dbaccess).
Any pointers?

Run: file $INFORMIXDIR/bin/* $INFORMIXDIR/lib/*sql*
If there's a significant difference between the file type for isql and
sqlexec, then you have mismatched executables somewhere. Is this
running on PowerPC or Intel?

It was a clean install. It fails when I try to execute isql. I'm off tp work now and will check it out according to the suggestions. Much appreciated! Will report back! Kate
Jonathan, It looks to me like I've got the wrong ISQL. I did as you suggested and output is below. Can you confirm? And is so, do I have to reinstall from scratch? -bash-3.00$ file $INFORMIXDIR/bin/* $INFORMIXDIR/lib/*sql* /usr/informix/bin/bcheck: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/cace: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/changrp: setuid setgid ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Inteld /usr/informix/bin/chkengine: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/chkenv: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/chkserver: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/convloc: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, IA-64, version 1 (Sd /usr/informix/bin/cperf: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/crtcmap: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dbaccess: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dbaccessdemo7: Bourne shell script text executable /usr/informix/bin/dbexport: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dbimport: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dbload: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dblog: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/dbschema: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/del_gls: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/esql: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/esqldemo5: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/esqlvers: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/finderr: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/glfiles: Bourne shell script text executable /usr/informix/bin/infenv: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, IA-64, version 1 (Sd /usr/informix/bin/infxmsg: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/isql: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, IA-64, version 1 (Sd /usr/informix/bin/isqldemo: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/isqlrf: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, IA-64, version 1 (Sd /usr/informix/bin/mkdbsdir: setuid setgid ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Inteld /usr/informix/bin/msgfile: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/rofferr: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/salesdemo: shell archive or script for antique kernel text /usr/informix/bin/samevers: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/secheck: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/selog: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, versiod /usr/informix/bin/sgidsh: setuid setgid ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Inteld
Looks like you have a 64 bit version of ISQL as mentioned in your earlier mail and a 32 bit version of SE. Is your OS 64 bit? if you have a 32 bit OS, it could be a problem. VG
VG and Jonathon - THANK YOU. I should have had a 62 bit O/S and in fact though I had. But it turns out that my vendor made a mistake. So that's that. Thank you all for saving me hours of futile work. APPRECIATED!
