They are multiple of them, based on the type of message contained in them. The sql.iem file will contain the sql error messages. os.iem will contain os messages, etc. They should be located in $INFORMIXDIR/msg for pre 7.2 instances. With 7.2 and above, they will be located in $INFORMIXDIR/msg/en_us(for USA languages)/0333(for UNIX). The last directory in the path name is different for nt applications. The most common cause of this problem is if $INFORMIXDIR is not correctly set. The other is if you are trying to use pre 7.2 esql with a 7.2 installation. (This is because of the change requried in the directory structure for Global Language Support.) Madison Pruet
