Informix CEO Phil White told Dow Jones that the Universal Server and its developer's kit will go into beta test together. White also said that the Universal Server will match the performance of the company's OnLine Dynamic Server 7.2 database. White added that he believes the second half of the year will be the company's strongest; Informix is benefiting from Sybase's floundering, the growing database market and the evolution of the company's sales force into a direct-call organization. (9/23/96, on-line, Mark Boslet) COMPUTER RESELLER NEWS "Netscape, Informix huddle for dollars" Informix and Netscape are working together to bring transaction processing capabilities to Netscape's Internet and intranet offerings. Within the next three months, Netscape will unveil relational database capabilities within its commercial applications, including Netscape's Publishing System, Community System and Merchant System. Resellers stress the importance of linking databases to Web technology. "The key to making long-term business class decisions about the Internet and doing real day-to-day business over the Internet is transaction processing," said Al Hill, vice president of Successful Systems Solutions. (9/16/96, pg. 299, Charlotte Dunlap) COMPUTERGRAM INTERNATIONAL "Tandem's deal with Illustra places NT above UNIX for its money" Tandem will integrate Informix's DataBlade application programming interfaces into the NT version of ServerWare SQL. According to the publication, the implied meaning of this announcement is that NT has superseded UNIX in the telecommunications market. Tandem CEO Roel Pieper said "commercial client-server direction is all about NonStop Kernel [of ServerWare SQL] and NT." Numerous independent software vendors are writing DataBlade modules that will enable data to be stored as real, usable objects within existing databases. The database, which is bundled with Netscape's LiveWire Pro development tool, is being offered as part of Netscape's AppFoundry intranet development package. Netscape will include OnLine Workgroup Server with 20 of its 21 AppFoundry Web development tool offerings.
