ESQL/C -457 error on Unix System V release 4 version 3

I have a small program that I'm trying to run and am getting a -457 error when I try to connect to the informix database I'm using ESQL/C 4.11 UC1 on an old Informix-Turbo system. the ISAM error code is 0. The DB is up since I can get into in through ISQL and shared memory is pretty high, and there are no OS errors. SO i'm led to believe there is an internal informix error but have no idea how to find out what it is. Does anyone have any experience with this problem?
