Re: Help: Database Roles

Hello, >1) What are the generic responsibilities of a Database Administrator >(DBA) throughout the industry?? > >2) What are the generice responsibilities of a Database Programmer >throughout the industry?? I have written a definitive statement of the role of a DBA, which can be found in the comp.databases.informix archives. You might use the new, faster search engine at the International Informix Users Group site to find it: http://www.iiug.org Another good source of definitions is Joe Lumbley's book "Database Administrator's Survival Guide". It is not only a good definer, it has wonderful advice for the poor slobs that do these jobs--very useful. And one more is the Informix Certified Professional Examinations, which come in two DBA-like flavors: "Certified Database Professional", and "Certified Database Administrator" (or something pretty close to that). You might use those tools to help you define the roles and qualifications required for those jobs. Most of us just do whatever is required, and wear several hats at the same time. When you start defining these roles too closely, you run into a world of little details and grey zones. For example, I usually refer to the role of a Data Administrator, as opposed to the DBA. There is an organization of DAs, and they make a good case for yet another separate role. In other words, whatever works for you is the best industry standard.
