If your application is update intensive, I would not necessarily use RAID 5. It adds a substantial overhead. Also, unless you have huge sums of money to spend on a disk farm, it is difficult to structure RAID 5 to make the best use of Informix's parallelism. The best approach is to rigorously benchmark all aspects of your application.
