Hi I have an Informix database that is *HUGE* , I have one table ( the small one ) that has 50,000 records , each one in 35K in size. I need to give my client an visual basic app that simply displays a grid that he can see the records , change them , add , delete ... I managed to do that , but VB just read the whole table to memory , that took lots of time. what I want to do is , to get it to read just what needed to be displayed on screen , and read some more only if the user goes beyond whats currently displayed. I really want to do it fast , just put a few controls and let it work by itself , I have no time to invest in it. BTW I use informix ODBC driver ( there are two kinds.. ) can anyone help ? thanks Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
Hi Moshe, I am afraid the answer to this is not simple. If you are using the Data controls in VB, it will try to get the whole recordset on the client side and then display it. You best bet is to use ODBC API directly and issue a SQLFetch as you need the records. Using ODBC API is not a trivial task. You could try getting VB to reference an index within the database. VB could then use the 'seek' method to read the required information, and once that info has been read exit the sub routine.
