I _think_ that the methods Jim Gordon just mentioned (<list.120>) can be combined with Jeff's original suggestion to produce a solution. The idea is that you declare a array with a small number of entries, say enough for 1 1/2 screenfuls of data. Using the techniques from the Summer '89 Tech Notes you watch to see if the user is reaching the end of the array. When they get close, you pop out of the input array statement, write a screenful of data to the database (to a temporary table if necessary), then scroll the data up in the array, and re-enter the input array statement (using the Tech Notes tricks to get back to the proper row). I've used those Tech Notes tricks, and find them cumbersome but workable, and better than nothing for those problems that don't seem to be solvable any other way in 4gl. I haven't used them for this kind of problem, however, so I can't comment on the practicality of this solution. For those who don't have this issue of TechNotes, hopefully some one will type up a summary if Informix doesn't come up with an e-mailable version ... -- Harry Bochner -- bochner@das.harvard.edu
