The way memory is going these days, application predictions based on number of users, database size, and performance tuning measures like caching are really just smoke and mirrors. Buy all the memory your budget will allow, and scale it proportional to the size of the computer. Don't buy the "minimums" the vendor recommends, and you probably can't afford the maximums the o/s will support. Perhaps a good measure for a system would be to buy 1/2-way between these limits? (For starters, then you will need *more*!) If you held me down and twisted my arm, I would make up the following: If your database is measured in megabytes, measure your RAM in 10's of megabytes. If your database is measured in gigabytes, measure RAM in 100's of megabytes. If you can afford gigabytes of RAM, you can use it. To recap: whatever you have, you need *more*. later, __________________________________________________________________ | Clem Akins Standard Disclaimers Apply | |Reynolds Metals Co, Alloys Plant "Climb High, Cave Deep!" | | Muscle Shoals, Alabama USA cwakins@leia.alloys.rmc.com | |________________________________________________________________|
