If I am not mistaken, Informix was (and is still?) developed on SPARC/Solaris, meaning everything else is a port and subject to errors inherent in every porting task. No glaring errors mind you, just little issues that indicate the product just works better on the platform for which it was originally developed. The same holds true for Oracle. Anyone heard if the Informix developers are getting shiny new IBM p-series S80's to play with? -----Original Message----- From: owner-informix-list@iiug.org [mailto:owner-informix-list@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Rajesh Kapur Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 2:58 PM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: IDS 9.x stability on Solaris vs Linux We are currently running IDS 9.3/IDS 9.4 on Solaris 8 with pleasurable stability. We are considering moving to Linux for cost savings. IBM support tells me that IDS is supported on Linux 2.4, glibc 2.2.x. Would someone care to comment on the relative stability of IDS on Solaris vs. Linux? Should we go for Redhat Linux (7.3, 9, enterprise) or some other Linux? Thanks! Rajesh sending to informix-list

I'm not saying it's not developed in Solaris. But there are specific Solaris bugs as there are other platform bugs. And there are generic bugs. The QA is made in all available platforms. So, you can have specific Linux bugs as you can have Solaris specific bugs. I agree that using a platform with more customers (like Solaris) can have advantages. The probability of having someone hit the bugs first than you is higher in widespread platforms like Solaris than in other less spread platforms like Tru64. And it's usual to have the first generic bug's fixes in the most used platforms. regards.
