I'm eager to try this feature in the very near future to see how much it will improve IO, backup performance, query performance, etc. but would like to know if it is free. Thanks in advance for any info. Kern --
Compression was introduced, along with repack and shrink, in 11.50.xC4. = While repack and shrink may be used without charge on any edition, = compression requires an additional license and can only be used with = Ultimate Edition. As an FYI, defragment was added in 11.7 and is free to use on any = edition. It is most definitely not free. It's a chargeable add-on to Ultimate Edition only, and weighs in at around US$820 per "PVU", or $6,000 to $8,000 per modern x86 core, so it's very much a product for the high-end user.
Hi , For enterprise its free. Its beautifull on disk usage ( ~ 70% save space). I/O is good. But if your table have insert/delete/update more than select stmts, slow little bit (negligible) :-) rgds schillache
Um, NO, the Storage Optimization feature, or table data compression, is NOT free with the Ultimate Edition (used to be called Enterprise Edition) it is an extra cost add-on. It IS included with the Ultimate Warehouse Edition which also includes the Informix Warehouse Accelerator but that is a more expensive edition than the base Ultimate Edition. (Note that buying/upgrading to Ultimate Warehouse Edition is cheaper than adding Storage Optimization alone to an Ultimate Edition license and you get IWA too!) This was all pointed out during the original thread last month. Art Art S.
