Nigel Normally I would do this, but the environment that I am working in does not allow this type of action. A great number of the programs are non-informix, accessing the database though a gateway product. Currently we capture all the rogue statements from the SMI and then run them by hand. I am looking to extend this out by getting a program to automatically produce explain output for the queries. I do not want to excessively load the system by re-executing the statement (in the case of update and delete I cannot rerun them!). What I would really like is a client side environment variable that could be used to get the engine to 'optimise only' and produce the explain output.
