Beyond the obvious: Keep the disk from filling? Sure. Make the message path point to a FIFO and BEFORE starting the engine start a reader program on the FIFO to suck messages out of it and deposit them in a file or set of files. That reader will have to be intelligent about what it does in the event that the disk it is writting to fills, etc and must be careful not to become distracted by long events or the FIFO will fill up and the same engine hanging will occur.
