Anything compiled with 5.0x ESQL/C will still work with the 7.1x Engines provided that you set the SQLEXEC environment variable to the 7.1x Relay Module (sqlrm). However, your performance will be significantly improved if you recompile the 5.0x ESQL/C programs with the 7.1x ESQL/C. Anything compiled with the 6.0x ESQL/C should continue to work with the 7.1x Engines without needing any extra environment variables set. However, I would still advise recompiling with the 7.1x ESQL/C as soon as convenient. Unless you do that, you will not necessarily obtain all the bug fixes (I don't whether this would be significant to you or not -- if what you've got is working OK, it is not likely to be a big problem).
