Re: Help w/intl characters
Posted in 1997
You have run into the typical problem of software developed in the US.
They don't understand that there may be more characters than in 7 bit
ascii.
The only whay Informix have arround this problem is to use NLS if you
are on 7.1x or GLS if you are on 7.2x - unfortunate but true.
You can insert 8 bit characters by putting them in a variable and
inserting that. However they can't occur in a literal string in an
insert statement in any product from Informix. (The limitation is
probably implemented in the database server itself.)
The problem of using NLS or GLS is of course all the trouble with
finding out about and implementing locale support on whatever OS you
are working. Not an easy task, but RTFM on it.
Of course you do gain some additional benefits from NLS/GLS in support
for proper sort orders and the like.
