Help!!!!

David's initial server initialization (oninit -iy) failed with "Not enough room in ROOT DBspace. Requested 218138K, ONCONFIG value 'ROOTSIZE' 150000K" and a fatal shared-memory error. Respondents explained the configured root dbspace is too small for what the ONCONFIG asks it to hold — chiefly the physical log and the number/size of logical logs — so he needed roughly 70MB more. Suggested fixes: raise ROOTSIZE (ensuring the underlying device/chunk has the space), or shrink PHYSFILE and the logical log count/size. No follow-up confirming which worked is recorded.

I am getting the following error when I try to run
oninit:
oninit -iyoninit: Not enough room in ROOT DBspace.
Requested 218138K, ONCONFIG value 'ROOTSIZE' 150000K.
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization
What do I do next?

David,
Change the ROOTSIZE value to something smaller seems like an obvious thing to
try (I am not near an Informix install at thge moment so I can't really check
into this at the moment) -- this is defined in the configuration file for your
system, which is in the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/ directory.
Make sure that the device you are putting this space onto has sufficient
space, of course; but 218k seems too large from my experience; the install
documents for your version will have some suggested guidelines, IIRC.
In general the rootspace wants to fairly small, but big enough to accomodate
the *initial* physical & logical logs. Once the system is up it is considered
good practice to create seperate spaces and migrate the logs and make sure
that all of one's data goes into some other space than the root dbspace; this
space tends to be very active in a functioning system and it is not a good
thing to overstress it with data and logs.
You might also post your operating system and which version of IDS ... my
suggestions would be limited solely to Solaris, which may not be of use to you
on other operating systems.

Hi
You have to increase the root dbspaace size in the onconfig file.
If you are testing the engine prior to a restore you may want to comment the
physdbs and logdbs
I had this error too when testing a new installation prior to restore
I was also decreasing some other parameters value such as locks
Please try this and let me know
Diane

Rootsize should be increase and not decrease
System is requesting 218k and value in onconfig file is 150k

Reduce
the size of the physical log, reduce the number and/or size of
logical logs, or increase the size of the rootdbs. You need to get arount
70Mb more space from one or more of these options

You do not have enough room in the root dbspace.
May be your physical log and logical logs space is bigger than the root
dbspace you are trying to create. Check your onconfig file.
