Changing to symbolic links

One of the sites where I am currently consulting has created instances and dbspaces using full pathnames of exact devices, but now can see the wisdom of using symbolic links. They would like to change all device names in the fastest way possible, preferably without unloading and reloading the databases. Any ideas about the best way of doing this would be much appreciated.
