Using the variant data type you can handle many datatypes in the db without recompiling even if your db is changed. "simply" recompile the app isn't simple any more when it consists of a large number of more or less separate programs (hundreds perhaps). Additionally we need to syncronize databases and upgrades to applications. We can not accept recompilation even after major DLL changes and are investigating if this can be solved in New Era. Any ideas? In VB a select * from .. (or any other select) will automatically create a "record" for you *at runtime* with all selected fields defined. A very good idea! It must also be said about VB that it has significant problems handling decimal data. If you use standard procedures decimal fields ends up in a floating point variable internaly in VB. Hardly a good idea if you need to avoid rounding problems. As far as we have been able to determine Delphi also stores decimal datatypes *internally* as floating point. We haven't had the time to verify this completely yet, but if it is the case it is a significant problem.
