virtual portion memory size
Posted in 2008
A user on IDS 9.40FC9 / Solaris 10 asked why an 8 GB virtual portion was created as two 4 GB shared memory segments and whether a single 8 GB segment was possible. Replies first pointed at the Solaris kernel limit on maximum segment size (shmsys:shminfo_shmmax in /etc/system). The thread then concluded differently: IDS itself capped individual shared memory segments at 4 GB even on 64-bit builds in the 9.x line, with larger segments only supported from version 10 onward, so no tuning would give a single 8 GB segment on 9.40.

Hi, I have ids 9.40fc9 running on SOLARIS 10. I assign 8GB to VIRTUAL PORTION , but database split this into two 4GB portion. Is it possible to have only one 8 GB virtual portion? is there any extra configuration for solaris or informix ? thanks in advance
Solaris has a kernel parameter that defines the largest shared memory segment. Don't remember what that is though. I believe that parameter can be tweaked in '/etc/system' and is called 'shmmax' >From /usr/include/sys/shm.h: /* * Shared Memory information structure */ struct shminfo { int shmmax, /* max shared memory segment size */ shmmin, /* min shared memory segment size */ shmmni, /* # of shared memory identifiers */ shmseg, /* (obsolete) */ shmall; /* (obsolete) */ };
The parameter is actually refered to in our /etc/system file as 'shminfo_shmmax' (solaris 5.8) MM
I think the parameter in /etc/system is set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295 Thank you, Kannan -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Art Kagel Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2008 10:31 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: virtual portion memory size [12507] Solaris has a kernel parameter that defines the largest shared memory segment. So even if the OS let you create shared memory segments > 4GBb, IDS was limiting the sizes to 4Gb.

So in the 9.x family, you are limited to a max size of 4Gb shared memory segments.
