Using raw devices makes a difference not only in OnLine, in any database that can be configured to use raw devices it really makes a difference because the diferrence is at the OS Level . Raw devices bypasses the caching (at os level) that is normally associated with block devices , so raw devices offers a more direct way to the physical device allowing applications to have a better control over the timing of IO access (Great for RDBMS's). Anyway , a raw device is bound to a block device, but without the buffering at os level. Hope this helps you.
