Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

I've answered my own question and thought that others may run into
the same problem. When I configured my client to access the
7.2 server, I set INFORMIXSQLHOSTS variable to a file name
on my pc (C:\\informix\\etc\\sqlhosts). I suspect that Informix
doesn't expect such a long filename causing some corruption
in memory resulting in these bogus DNS searches. In fact,
after I cleared the INFOMIXSQLHOSTS variable in setnet32,
setnet32 did not do any DNS calls and came up right away.
The connect times also went back to normal.
All seems to work without the variable being set at all.
Thanks again for the help
